Raw Food & Traveling
Five Best Countries to Visit for Raw Foodists

People love traveling for many different reasons. For example, Americans usually have ancestors who came from another place to this country, my family is spread out over the Middle East, Asia and Europe, and many of us long to go and visit the place they came from as well as their extended family. I’ll always remember Amy, an American girl I met in Scotland who kept talking about her first ancestor who came from Scotland in 1716 and put a strong stamp on her family that could still be discerned. Like other Americans (according to what she told me!!), intend to go to Scotland to try to get more information on Francis Beaty, the 20-year-old firebrand young Scotsman who was “banished to the colonies” by Great Britain because of all the mischief he was stirring up on behalf of his native country. So anyways, lets cut to the chasse. Unfortunately, if you love raw food sometimes the difficulties tend to stamp out the pleasures of visiting other countries and rubbing shoulders with other cultures and so to make things more fun and interesting here are the 10 cities or countries you might enjoy visiting if you are a raw foodist.

London, England

There are so many reasons to visit London that it's hard to know where to start. Whether your background is British or not, Great Britain laid a foundation for the culture we enjoy on these shores, and the names of writers, kings and queens, places, warriors, and legends strike a familiar chord for us. A visit to the British Museum is a walk through our own history. The new British Library holds not only Shakespeare's folios but also the Dead Sea Scrolls and early versions of English translations of the Bible.. if you are interested. The reason why I am is due to my interests in religious studies. You can visit the homes of legendary heroes from the history books of your youth. When I was there in 2005, my first impression was of an overcrowded, bustling city; however, we found it easy to get around using public transportation. This is a good place to visit if you are on a raw and living foods diet. The UK Centre for Living Foods is in Shropshire, only three hours from London. The Centre conducts training for all levels of living foodists, and can be your guide to restaurants and markets while you’re in England. They also offer several events throughout the year. You can see their calendar and other information at their website at www.livingfoods.co.uk. Also, look at this website for a raw-foods group that meets from time to time: rawfood.meetup.com/491.

Uganda

6 years ago I went on a Safari from Uganda to Cape Town. At the beginning of the trip we had an African chef who cooked for us, but according to some, he was not good enough so in need of a chef they choose me… At first I thought that it as going to be hard to find the right ingredients, being a vegetarian at the time. But According to my surprise it's a raw-foodist's dream. Uganda was colonized by Great Britain, which occupied the country for 100 years until Idi Amin and his army took over and wrought such enormous brutality and havoc on the citizens. The villagers we met are Christians of the Anglican variety and practiced many British customs including afternoon tea. We trundled around the countryside in a German-made van but the villagers required that we stop and take time for the afternoon ritual. They lay out a spread of unbelievable fresh fruits and vegetables, and they would feast. The bananas and pineapples were legendary! While Uganda has survived much turmoil and anguish through the years, their government seems to be stable now, and they are recovering some of the positive social features such as good schools that the British brought. Traveling there seems to be safe now and several tour companies make it possible to visit safari lodges and hotels where the raw foods from the countryside can be obtained. Go to www.myuganda.co.ug for reliable information. Some vegetarian restaurants in Kampala: www.happycow.net.

PS: Please do visit the Kings of Raw Foodist, Low Land Silver back Gorillas… I fell in love with them.

Tuscany, Italy

This is an ancient part of Italy where even Etruscan structures still stand and are occupied and used. The weather is perfect, and the countryside is beautiful. However, for raw foodists, it offers wonderful vacations at organic farms where you can obtain lodging and food and learn about organic-farming techniques. For help in finding organic farms that offer lodging and food, go to www.onestopitaly.com.

Indonesia

This country is made up of 17,508 islands! and has a population of 222 million people. It is largely Muslim although officially it is not an Islamic state. The culture is ancient. It has been a trade region since the 7th century. Because the fossilized remains of homo erectus were found here, it is surmised by archeologists that Indonesia was inhabited as long as two million years ago. This country has had a tumultuous history, but travelers now come here safely. Because of the many cultures and ethnic groups in Indonesia, just about any kind of food can be found. There are many fresh-food markets where you can find a dazzling array of tropical fruit including fresh pineapples and coconuts, many indigenous to Indonesia, so be prepared for a food treat if you go there. You can get more information and travel help at www.lonelyplanet.com. Go to www.happycow.net for restaurant listings. My Wife and I stayed on a small island called Gilig meno for 2 weeks enjoying all the exotic treats.

Guatemala

This is another country that has had turbulent periods in its past; however, it's beautiful and well worth visiting because of its history and culture. It now has a stable government. For the raw foodists, this is a paradise. Avocados grow wild. The honey is extraordinary because of the many tropical flowers that provide the pollen for the bees. Melons of all kinds straight from the fields are available everywhere–at the markets, on the roadside–as are squashes, plantains, corn, mango, papaya. As I said, a raw food paradise. Some recommended cities: Antigua, Atitlan, Solola (for its market), Chichicastenango (also for its extraordinary market). You can get more information and travel help at www.lonelyplanet.com. For restaurants: www.happycow.net.
