Hazelnuts

Introduction

*Hazelnuts, also called filberts or cobnuts are kernels of the seed of the shrub Corylus avellana.

*They are very good sources of essential fatty acids, proteins, vitamins and minerals.

*The amino acid composition in proteins in the nuts is such that to obtain maximum benefit from them, they have to be combined with other grains, legumes or nuts.

*They have a sweet taste and can be eaten raw or dry roasted.

*The seed has a thin, dark brown skin which has a bitter flavor, and so the nuts need to be blanched before eating.

*Number of nuts per serving is 20.

Are they raw?

Yes and No.
*Yes, if picked fresh or if it says raw or sundried on the package.
*No, because the hazelnuts at the supermarkets are sometimes roasted and salted. Make sure you read the label.

Health Benefits

1. Hazelnuts contain a high concentration of vitamin E, which prevents oxidation of the polyunsaturated fatty acids.

2. Also has minor quantities of vitamin A, which is a natural antioxidant and has cancer preventing properties.

3. Excellent source of minerals like manganese, selenium and zinc that play a vital role in metabolism.

4. Like all nuts, they are rich in dietary fiber.

5. Good source of protein.

6. Good source of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are anti inflammatory in nature.

7. Naturally cholesterol free and free of trans fatty acids.

8. Good source of B-group vitamins, which are essential for release of energy from food we eat.

9. Raw or dry roasted hazelnuts have no sodium at all, so very good for people on sodium restricted diets.
