Fennel Seed

Introduction

*Fennel seeds are actually the dried fruits of the fennel plant, a member of the parsley family.

*These are yellow-brown to dull brown in color, small and oblong with longitudinal ridges. These closely resemble cumin seeds in appearance, but have a bit of a rounded appearance.

*They have a sweetish taste with anise-seed like aroma and fragrance.

*These seeds add a delicate fragrance and aroma to both sweet and savory dishes.

*Buying and storage: Select fresh, healthy-looking fennel seeds with a sweet fragrance. Store them in airtight containers in a cupboard away from light and heat. They keep fresh for about 6 months in the cupboard and longer when refrigerated.

Is it raw?

Yes, these are mostly raw or sundried.
Make sure you read the label.

Health Benefits

1. Fennel seeds contain a volatile oil called anethole, which is a phytoestrogen, and is responsible for some of its medicinal properties.

2. A tea prepared by pouring boiling hot water on fennel seeds can relieve minor pain and discomfort from digestive disorders like indigestion, flatulence, etc.

3. Fennel tea at room temperature can be used as soothing liquid for sore eyes in some places.

4. Fennel also has diuretic properties, and hence is used in the elimination of excess fluids from the body. It can also be used to reduce hypertension.

5. Fennel seeds and fennel tea soothes and relieves discomfort from minor upper respiratory tract infections like cough, sore throat, congestion, etc.

6. A lot other nutrients are present in anise seeds, but as anise seeds are used in very small amounts, they do not provide any nutritional benefits.
