Cardamom

Introduction

*Cardamom is the seedpod of two different types of trees in the ginger family called Zingiberaceae.

*cardamom seedpods come in two different colors – green and dark brown.

*The green cardamoms are light green to bright green in color and small compared to the brown variety with dark brown to black aromatic seeds inside the pod.

*The brown cardamoms are larger and are woody brown or straw brown in color with dark brown to black aromatic seeds inside the pod.

*Cardamom is used whole or ground as a flavoring in both sweet and savory dishes.

*They have a sweetish aroma and taste, and they add a fragrant aromatic flavor to the dishes.

*Cardamom is also used as medicine for common ailments.

*Buying and storage: Select fresh, healthy-looking, evenly-sized and heavy for their size seedpods without any visible holes and discoloration. Store them in airtight containers in a cupboard away from light and heat. Cardamoms can be refrigerated to increase their shelf life.

Health Benefits

1. Cardamom is widely used in traditional medicines of India, China, Japan and Korea.

2. Cardamom seeds have an essential oil that is responsible for its medicinal properties.

3. They have an aromatic flavor and taste, and so the seeds are chewed as a moth freshener, especially after a meal.

4. Green cardamom, both seeds and the outer skin, is used to treat infections of the teeth and gums.

5. They also prevent and relieve mild respiratory troubles like congestion, sore throat, etc.

6. They are also used to treat digestive disorders like indigestion, constipation, dysentery, etc.

7. A lot other nutrients are present in anise seeds, but as anise seeds are used in very small amounts, they do not provide any nutritional benefits.
